This week in my classes we are talking about BALANCE. Black and white. Yin and yang. Strength and softness. Drive and surrender. Everything in life is a delicate balance. The frustrating thing about balance is that once we find it, once we actually capture that elusive moment of equity and harmony, we seem to lose it. I’m reminded of when I first started learning how to do handstands. Those first few moments of being upside down without immediately falling over were like total magic for me. I remember thinking, “Oh my God I’ve got it! I just have to stay PERFECTLY still and not move a muscle!” Really, what needed to happen, which I didn’t discover for a while, was that I needed to learn how to breathe and ebb and flow with my subtle body shifts and sways while upside down. The thing about being balanced is, there’s no one miraculous point of balanced perfection. Everything around you is constantly shifting, and in order to stay in balance you must learn to shift with the changes and reestablish your equilibrium. Whether it is upside down in a handstand, or the constant changing of the events, energies, and moods in your life. Being adaptable is the only way to truly stay in balance.
