Take a look at yourself today. Like really look. Inside your soul. Who are you? Not like, oh I’m a wife. I’m a mother. I’m a teacher. I’m a doctor. Not your labels but WHO are you? We get so caught up in the “what” and the “how much” but….like….really. Who are you? I’ve been asking myself this question lately and seeking the answers is sometimes a challenge. It’s so easy to fall back on a label because, after all, what we do is oftentimes who we become. I learned this lesson at the really young age of 22 when I retired from dancing. As I threw out my last pair of pointe shoes, it was like my whole identity was thrown in the garbage. There’s a saying that a dancer dies twice. That may be true, but on the flip side, that’s two chances for rebirth. We can look at these endings as something sad or we can choose to look at them from the perspective of learning more about who we are. The day I quit ballet was the day I became the human being that I am. Shed your labels and find out who you are.
